Growing Banana Plants Indoors

Growing banana plants indoors is popular with apartment dwellers and cold-climate gardeners. With the right variety and conditions, indoor bananas can thrive and even fruit. The main challenges are providing enough light and humidity.

Light

This is the biggest challenge. A south-facing window is the minimum. Supplemental grow lights (full-spectrum LED, 12-14 hours daily) make a significant difference. See Sunlight Requirements.

Humidity

Most homes are too dry for bananas, especially in winter with heating running. Aim for 50% humidity or higher. Use a humidifier, group plants together, or place the pot on a pebble tray with water. Low humidity causes brown leaf edges.

Container and Soil

Use a large pot (at least 15 gallons for dwarf varieties) with good drainage holes. See Soil and pH for potting mix recommendations.

Pests

Spider mites and aphids are the main indoor pests. Inspect regularly and treat early.
