Sunlight Requirements for Banana Plants

Banana plants are tropical understory and clearing plants that thrive in full sun. Most varieties need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy growth, and 10 to 12 hours is even better for fruiting varieties.

Full Sun vs. Partial Shade

All fruiting varieties perform best in full sun. Insufficient light is one of the most common reasons banana plants fail to produce fruit. Ornamental varieties like Musa Zebrina and Ae Ae can tolerate and sometimes prefer partial shade, which can actually intensify their foliage colors.

Indoor Light

Growing bananas indoors is challenging primarily because of light. A south-facing window provides the most light in the Northern Hemisphere but is still less than outdoor conditions. Supplemental grow lights can help — full-spectrum LED lights running 12 to 14 hours per day bring indoor bananas much closer to outdoor performance. See Can You Grow Bananas Indoors? for details.

Signs of Too Little Light

Signs of Too Much Light

This is rare for most varieties but can occur with variegated types like Ae Ae. Symptoms include scorched, bleached patches on leaves, especially on the white/pale portions that lack protective chlorophyll.
