Yellow Leaves on Banana Plants

Yellowing leaves are the single most common complaint among banana growers, and they can indicate several different issues. Some yellowing is normal — the oldest (lowest) leaves on a banana plant naturally age, turn yellow, and die. If only the bottom leaves are yellowing and new growth looks healthy, this is usually just the normal leaf lifecycle and nothing to worry about.

Common Causes

1. Overwatering or Poor Drainage

When roots sit in waterlogged soil, they suffocate and begin to rot. The plant can no longer absorb water or nutrients efficiently, and leaves turn yellow. Check soil drainage and adjust watering practices. If roots are mushy and dark, see Root Rot.

2. Underwatering

Drought stress also causes yellowing, starting with the oldest leaves. The leaf tips and edges often turn brown and crispy along with the yellowing. Increase watering frequency and check that water is penetrating to the root zone.

3. Nutrient Deficiency

Potassium deficiency is the most common nutritional cause of yellowing in bananas. Symptoms start as yellowing along the leaf margins of older leaves, progressing inward. Nitrogen deficiency causes overall pale, light green to yellow leaves. See Fertilizing Guide.

4. Cold Damage

Exposure to temperatures below 50°F can cause leaves to yellow and die. If this happened after a cold snap, it is likely cold damage. See Overwintering.

5. Disease

Panama disease (Fusarium wilt) causes yellowing that typically starts on one side of the leaf or on older leaves, progressing inward. Splitting the pseudostem reveals brown discoloration in the vascular tissue. This is a serious disease with no cure.
