Red Dacca (Red Banana)

Scientific NameMusa acuminata 'Red Dacca' (AAA Group)
Mature Height10-16 feet
USDA Zones9b-11
FruitYes — sweet with raspberry undertones, red/purple skin
Cold HardyNo — needs consistent warmth
TypeFruiting / Ornamental

Red Dacca produces stunning reddish-purple fruit with creamy, pinkish flesh that has a sweet flavor with subtle raspberry or strawberry notes. The plant itself is also highly ornamental, with a reddish-maroon pseudostem and darker leaf midribs that make it a landscape standout even before it fruits.

Red bananas are considered a specialty fruit and are prized in tropical regions around the world. Growing your own is the best way to experience them at peak ripeness, since they are rarely available in stores outside of tropical areas.

Growing Conditions

Red Dacca needs warm, humid conditions and does not tolerate cold well at all. It is best suited to zones 10 and 11, or zone 9b with winter protection. Full sun, very rich soil, and consistent heavy watering are essential. See Watering and Soil and pH.

This is a larger plant that is not ideal for containers or indoor growing. Greenhouse cultivation is an option for growers outside the tropics.

Time to Fruit

Red Dacca is one of the slower fruiting varieties, often taking 18 to 24 months from a large pup to first harvest. The wait is worth it. See How Long Do Banana Plants Take to Fruit?

Propagation

Pup division is the standard method. Red Dacca does not produce pups as freely as Cavendish types, so patience is needed.

Common Issues

Susceptible to Panama disease Race 1. Failure to fruit is common in marginal climates where the plant does not get enough sustained heat.
