Grand Nain (often pronounced "Grand Nine") is the banana variety that dominates global commercial production. The Chiquita and Dole bananas you buy at the grocery store are almost certainly Grand Nain. It is slightly taller than Dwarf Cavendish but produces larger bunches, often exceeding 100 fingers per bunch under optimal conditions.

For home growers in warm climates, Grand Nain is an outstanding choice because of its proven productivity, disease resistance relative to other Cavendish types, and excellent fruit quality. The flavor of home-ripened Grand Nain bananas is noticeably better than store-bought fruit that was picked green and shipped thousands of miles.

Growing Conditions

Full sun, rich soil, heavy and consistent watering, and regular fertilization. Grand Nain is a hungry, thirsty plant. See Watering, Fertilizing, and Soil and pH.

This variety is best suited to zones 9b through 11. It can be grown in containers and brought indoors for winter in cooler areas, but its size makes this less practical than with Dwarf Cavendish. Consider greenhouse growing as an alternative in marginal climates.

Time to Fruit

10 to 18 months depending on conditions. Grand Nain fruits reliably and produces large bunches. See When to Harvest and Ripening After Harvest.

Propagation

Produces pups readily. Pup division is straightforward. Also widely available as tissue culture plantlets.

Common Issues

Susceptible to Panama disease Tropical Race 4, which is a major concern in commercial production but less so for isolated home plantings. Also vulnerable to Black Sigatoka and banana weevils.
