Ae Ae is the most sought-after collector banana in the world. Both the leaves and the fruit are strikingly variegated with irregular white and green sectors. The fruit is edible and sweet. Because the variegation means less chlorophyll, Ae Ae grows more slowly and is more finicky than standard varieties, which adds to its rarity and value.
Growing Conditions
Bright indirect light to partial sun — the variegated portions of the leaves burn easily in direct sun, unlike most bananas. Rich, well-draining soil. Consistent warmth required — zones 10 and 11 only, or greenhouse. More sensitive to overwatering than most bananas — root rot is a risk.
Propagation
Pup division only. Does not produce pups frequently. This is the main reason it remains expensive and uncommon.
